Now the Supreme Court has written a letter to the central government regarding this. The Supreme Court has ordered the former CJI to vacate the bungalow as soon as possible. At the same time, DY Chandrachud has also clearly stated the reason for vacating the bungalow.
The Supreme Court administration wrote a letter to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on July 1 and ordered to vacate the bungalow immediately. The Supreme Court said in its notice- You are requested to vacate Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg from Hon’ble DY Chandrachud ji without any delay.According to Rule 3B of 2022, he was allowed to stay in the bungalow for an additional 6 months. This period ended on 10 May 2025. He was allowed to stay in the bungalow for an additional time till 31 May 2025.
Let us tell you that DY Chandrachud was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from November 2022 to November 2024. He retired on 10 November 2024. However, even after retirement, he did not leave his Type 8 bungalow. According to the government rule, any CJI can stay in the bungalow for 6 months after retirement. At the same time, Justice Sanjeev Khanna, who became the CJI of the Supreme Court after him, and the current CJI BR Gavai are living in their old allotted bungalows.
Former CJI DY Chandrachud has clarified the reason for not vacating the bungalow. He says, the government has allotted him a new accommodation on rent. However, no one was living there for a long time, due to which the condition of the house was very bad. Its maintenance work is going on right now. DY Chandrachud said, “I had already informed the Supreme Court about this. When the house work is completely repaired, I will shift there without any delay.”
