US President Donald Trump on Tuesday talked about ending the tax exemption given to Harvard University. He wrote on Truth Social that the tax exemption given to the university can be reconsidered. Trump says that if the university continues to promote political, ideological and terrorism supporting diseases then it should be taxed as a political entity.
Trump reminded his supporters that tax-exempt status is contingent on serving the public interest. Harvard, like many other educational institutions in the US, currently has tax-exempt status. This status is given to organizations that serve the public interest, such as educational and religious institutions.
Earlier on Monday, Trump had stopped Harvard University’s funding of $2.2 billion (about Rs 18 thousand crores). The action came because Harvard refused to comply with White House demands aimed at cracking down on anti-Semitism on campus.
On April 3, the Trump administration placed a demand before the university that the government should be given control over the university’s governance, admission and hiring process and major changes should be made in them.
