INTERNATIONALWill India get permanent membership of the Security Council?

Tariq Albanai, Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations and Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Dialogue (IGN), has expressed support for India’s membership in the Security Council. He said if the number of Council members is increased from 21 to 27, India, being a major player on the world stage, will definitely be a contender.

When asked what should be ensured to reform the UNSC, Albani said that the goal of reform is to increase representation. So if it is decided that the council will be expanded then India will definitely be a contender. He said whatever form the Council takes after reform, it should be designed to last for the next century, based on the principles of inclusiveness, transparency, efficiency, effectiveness, democracy and accountability.

The spirit of reform requires both courage and creativity and the active participation of all delegations is essential as we work to build consensus on the key elements of Security Council reform. Earlier on April 1, the French Embassy in India had said that it would focus on the need for UNSC reform with the aim of getting India a permanent seat.
