Yakima, WA — The Yakima Police Department (YPD) received multiple honors this week at the Washington Association of Sheriffs & Police Chiefs conference, acknowledging the department’s ongoing support of Special Olympics Washington and its participation in the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR).
The department was awarded an Honor Roll recognition by Special Olympics Washington for its involvement in the 2024 Law Enforcement Torch Run, a statewide initiative that raises awareness and support for athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Torch Run is one of the largest grassroots fundraising efforts for Special Olympics programs across the country.
In addition to the agency recognition, YPD Officer Jason Marcellus was honored with the Unsung Hero Award, highlighting his dedication, leadership, and commitment to Special Olympics athletes and events. During the ceremony, Officer Marcellus was photographed holding the ceremonial torch alongside representatives from Special Olympics Washington and fellow police leaders.
The Yakima Police Department expressed gratitude for the partnership, stating they are “proud and thankful” to continue supporting Special Olympics Washington and its mission.
The event also featured a presentation of the 2024 Circle of Honor Agency Awards, with agencies from across Washington recognized for their contributions to the Torch Run and Special Olympics programming.
