Kent, Washington: The Kent Police Department is reminding parents and caregivers about the importance of using the correct car seat and restraint system for children traveling in vehicles.
According to the department, Washington State law requires children to be properly restrained based on their age, size and developmental needs. The guidance shared by police includes the following key points:
- Children must ride in a rear-facing car seat until at least age 2.
- Children must remain in a harnessed car seat until they reach the manufacturer’s height or weight limits.
- Children should then use a booster seat until they are large enough to properly fit an adult seat belt.
- Children 13 and under are generally recommended to ride in the back seat, where it is safer.
Kent Police acknowledged that choosing and correctly installing a car seat can sometimes be confusing for parents. The department encouraged families to learn about proper installation and seek assistance from qualified child passenger-safety resources.
Police also urged residents to share the information with friends and family to help keep children safe and reduce the risk of serious injuries or fatalities in crashes.
