As a symbol of strengthening deep cultural and religious ties between India and Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the ‘Mitra Vibhushanaya’ award by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
What is the Mitra Vibhushan Award?
- The “Mitra Vibhushan Award” is an honour of Sri Lanka, which is given for exceptional contribution towards friendly nations and promoting friendly relations.
- This award was started by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in February 2008.
The recipient of the honour is given a citation and a silver medallion, which is worn around the neck. - The medallion is studded and decorated with nine types of Sri Lankan gems (navaratnas) with the symbols of the lotus, globe, sun, moon and sheaf of rice.
