The long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) in Singapore has won a landslide majority by winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats in the general election held on Saturday and will now form the new government. This is the PAP’s decisive victory in the 14th consecutive election. It had won 83 seats in the 2020 election.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and the PAP sought a fresh mandate in the general election amid uncertainty over global economies caused by US trade tariffs. The PAP has ruled the country since independence. It has now been given another mandate for another five years.
The Election Commission said Singaporeans cast their votes for 92 of the 97 parliamentary seats at 1,240 polling stations to decide the future of politics. There are 27,58,846 registered voters in the country. This is Singapore’s 19th election
