Iran has banned dog walking in more than 20 cities in order to maintain social order and security. According to a report by Tehran-based Faraz News, the cities where the ban has been imposed include Kermanshah, Ilam, Hamadan, Kerman, Borujerd, Robat Karim, Lavasanat and Golestan.
Similar bans were first imposed in the capital Tehran in 2019, sparking further criticism among citizens. Iranian authorities have claimed that walking dogs poses a threat to people’s health. They also argue that walking dogs can lead to security issues.
Although he did not give any specific details about the move, according to reports, authorities are cracking down on dog owners violating the ban, leading to arrests and resistance. The reformist newspaper Etemad on Sunday quoted an official in the city of Ilam as saying that legal action would be taken against violators.
