Hate Crime Charges Filed After Threats Against Seattle Synagogue

USAHate Crime Charges Filed After Threats Against Seattle Synagogue

The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (KCPAO) has filed criminal charges against a 30-year-old man arrested in connection with a hate crime involving threats against a Seattle synagogue.

According to police, the incident occurred on December 12 at approximately 9:30 p.m., when officers responded to reports of threatening phone calls directed at a religious institution in the 1500 block of East Pike Street. Investigators determined that the suspect placed multiple phone calls to the synagogue, which were automatically forwarded to a security staff member’s phone.

Police reports state the suspect left two disturbing and profane voicemails, allegedly making anti-Jewish statements and issuing explicit threats to kill members of the synagogue. One voicemail reportedly included the statement, “When I find you, I’m going to murder all of you.”

The security staff member, who received the calls, considered the threats credible. She immediately notified a Seattle police captain, the synagogue’s religious leadership, and contacted 911.

During the investigation, officers contacted the suspect by phone, but he refused to identify himself. With assistance from police dispatch and the Real Time Crime Center, officers located an address linked to the suspect less than a mile from the synagogue.

At approximately 11:20 p.m., officers arrested the suspect at a residence in the 800 block of Seneca Street without incident. He was booked into the King County Jail and is currently being held on $150,000 bail.

Last week, a Seattle Police Department Bias Crimes detective completed the investigation and referred the case to prosecutors. On December 17, the KCPAO formally filed felony Hate Crime Offense charges against the suspect.
