Seattle, Wash. — Seattle police arrested a 25-year-old man early Monday morning after locating him driving a stolen SUV in the Belltown neighborhood. The suspect was also wanted on multiple felony warrants totaling more than $210,000.

Just after midnight on Dec. 29, a Seattle Police Department (SPD) officer observed an Audi SUV displaying a license plate registered to a Volkswagen Jetta. Believing the vehicle to be stolen, the officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, committing multiple traffic violations while attempting to evade police.

SPD contacted the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), where analysts located video footage showing the SUV traveling at a high rate of speed through Belltown and driving the wrong way down Bell Street.

Later that morning, the same officer spotted the suspect and the vehicle near First Avenue and Bell Street. While attempting to initiate contact again, the officer briefly lost sight of the SUV. Officers later located the stolen vehicle abandoned in a nearby parking lot.

RTCC analysts reviewed additional surveillance footage and provided officers with an image of the suspect leaving the area. Officers quickly located the man at a nearby park and took him into custody without incident.

During the arrest, officers recovered an Audi key and stolen property belonging to the vehicle’s registered owner from the suspect’s pockets. The SUV was impounded at the scene.

Police confirmed the suspect had outstanding warrants totaling more than $210,000, including an escape warrant and multiple burglary-related warrants. He was booked into King County Jail on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and the outstanding felony warrants.

Detectives with the General Investigations Unit are assigned to the case.
