Canada bows to Trump, removes ‘digital tax’ on American tech companies

USACanada bows to Trump, removes 'digital tax' on American tech companies

Canada has announced the withdrawal of the digital service tax imposed on American tech companies. The Canadian government has taken this step with the aim of advancing comprehensive trade talks with the United States. The announcement comes after US President Donald Trump’s action in which he halted negotiations with Ottawa on a digital tax.

“Canada’s new government is engaged in complex negotiations on a new economic and security partnership with the United States,” said a Department of Finance Canada press release. “Its focus is on getting the best deal for Canadian workers and businesses.” “Prime Minister Carney has made clear that Canada will take as much time as necessary to get a deal done, but no more,” the press release said. To support those negotiations, Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne has announced that Canada will abandon the Digital Services Tax (DST) in line with the United States.

Prime Minister Carney and President Trump have agreed that the parties will resume negotiations toward reaching a deal by July 21, 2025.” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed happiness over this and said, “This is a milestone in our talks for a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the United States.” “The new Canadian government will always be guided by the overall contribution of any potential agreement, with the best interests of Canadian workers and businesses in mind.”

He added, “Today’s announcement will help restart negotiations in line with the 21 July 2025 deadline set at the G7 Leaders Summit in Kananaskis this month.”
