SPORTS & BUSINESSCoco Gauff wins French Open, beats Sabalenka: Djokovic loses semifinal

World number-2 Coco Gauff has won the French Open. The 21-year-old American star defeated world number-1 tennis star Aryna Sabalenka 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the women’s singles final on Saturday. Sabalenka won the first set 7-6 in a match that lasted two hours and 38 minutes. Gauff has won the second Grand Slam of her career. She became the US Open champion in 2023.

An American player has become the champion in this tournament after 10 years. Before Gauff, Serena Williams became the champion here in 2015. Gauff lost the first set 7-6 at the Philippe Chatrier Court in Paris. Then she won the next two sets 6-2, 6-4 and won the title.

In the men’s category, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic lost the semi-final match. After the defeat, Djokovic said – ‘Maybe this was my last match. I don’t know, that’s why I am a little more emotional at the end.
If this was the last match of my career at the French Open, it was amazing to see the way the audience supported me.’ Djokovic will be 39 by next year’s French Open.

The 38-year-old Serbian star was defeated by 23-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (3). The match lasted 3 hours and 16 minutes. Djokovic said – ‘Do I want to play further, yes, I want. But whether I will be able to play here after 12 months, I don’t know. I said this could be my last match here. I didn’t say this would be my last match here.’
