At least 11 people were stabbed at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan on Saturday, six of them critically. Authorities said the suspected attacker has been taken into custody. Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters that at least 11 people were injured in the attack.Munson Healthcare Hospital informed via social media that all 11 injured people were being treated at their hospital in northern Michigan and all of them had suffered knife injuries.
Six of the injured were in critical condition late Saturday night, while five were in serious condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Megan Brown. Tiffany Deifel, 36, who lives in Honor, about 25 miles from Traverse City, said she was in the parking lot when she saw the chaos around her. “It was really scary. My sister and I were really scared,” she said. Michigan State Police said the suspect was taken into custody.
Sheriff Shea said the suspect is possibly from Michigan, but declined to provide further details. The incident remains under investigation and authorities are trying to determine a motive for the attack. At the same time, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has expressed her deep condolences to the victims. Walmart has also issued a statement on the incident, saying that they are fully cooperating with law enforcement agencies in the investigation.
