The Awami League has expressed deep concern over the reportedly scheduled meeting of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer with Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government in Bangladesh. The Awami League has expressed deep concern over British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s reportedly scheduled meeting today with Bangladesh’s self-proclaimed chief advisor Muhammad Yunus, the party said in a statement posted on its Facebook page on Monday.
It also warned that any such formal meeting would legitimize an unelected and unconstitutional administration. The statement said a formal letter from the UK-based branch of the Awami League has been sent to Downing Street, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the King’s Foundation and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
In this, the British authorities have been urged not to inadvertently betray the Yunus administration, while the crisis in Bangladesh is deepening. It is worth noting that Muhammad Yunus is going on an official visit to Britain from 10 to 13 June.During this time, he is expected to meet King Charles III. Apart from this, there is also a possibility of a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Starmer. Before his visit to Britain, Yunus had announced that general elections would be held in the country by April 2026.
The announcement of general elections in August 2024 is a major development for Bangladesh politics after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. Army chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman said on May 21 that the elections should be held by December this year, The Daily Star reported.
