INTERNATIONALWhat is the Shimla Agreement, which Pakistan is threatening to postpone?

After the Pahalgam terrorist attack, the Indian government has dealt a huge blow to Pakistan on the political, economic and diplomatic fronts. The Modi government took five big decisions, in which tough decisions like suspending the Indus agreement were taken. Pakistan also retaliated to India’s decisions. A meeting of Pakistan’s National Security Committee was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahnawaz Sharif. Pakistan has threatened that it may suspend the Shimla Agreement.

The Simla Agreement, signed on 2 July 1972 after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, was aimed at restoring peace and normalising relations between India and Pakistan. The war resulted in the separation of East Pakistan and the creation of the independent nation of Bangladesh after India’s intervention. Signed in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, the treaty was signed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

The official statement said that the Government of India and the Government of Pakistan have decided that the two countries should put an end to the conflicts and confrontations which have been a source of trouble for their relations and work towards promoting friendly and harmonious relations and establishing lasting peace in the subcontinent,So that both countries can devote their resources and energies to the important task of advancing the welfare of their people.
