India has successfully tested a long-range hypersonic missile. The active cooled combustor of the scramjet engine has been successfully tested on the ground for 100 seconds. Hypersonic missiles fly five times faster than the speed of sound. That is, these missiles are faster than Mach 5.
Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), the Hyderabad-based laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has achieved a significant milestone in the field of hypersonic weapon technology.
The world’s major powers are busy making these missiles because they can dodge existing missile and air defense systems. The specialty of the missile is its high speed, excellent control and ability to fly at low altitude.
