Lufthansa plane flew in the air for 10 minutes without a pilot

POLITICS & LAWSLufthansa plane flew in the air for 10 minutes without a pilot

Last year, something happened in a Lufthansa plane going from Germany to Spain that will blow your mind. This plane, carrying about 200 passengers and six crew members, flew in the air for 10 minutes without a pilot.

On February 17, 2024, during a flight from Frankfurt to Seville, Spain, the co-pilot of the aircraft suddenly fainted and the pilot was in the toilet at that time. A report by the Spanish accident investigation authority CIAC said that although the unconscious co-pilot inadvertently operated the controls, the plane was able to fly in a stable manner thanks to the activated autopilot.

Meanwhile, the voice recorder recorded strange noises in the cockpit that were consistent with a serious health emergency. The plane’s 43-year-old pilot told investigators that the 38-year-old co-pilot was perfectly fine and conscious when he went to the toilet.

But when he returned eight minutes later, the cockpit door did not open, even though he had entered the access code for the security door. The pilots panicked and called the deck via the intercom but got no response. The pilot then tried to open the door by entering the emergency code. However, shortly before the door opened, the co-pilot opened it from inside despite being sick. The pilot then decided to land in Madrid, where his colleague was taken to hospital.
