Black Box: Orange color but still why is it called Black Box

INTERNATIONALBlack Box: Orange color but still why is it called Black Box

After the plane crash in Ahmedabad, black boxes and digital video recorders (DVRs) have been discovered. These devices are helpful in providing in-depth information about the causes of the accident. Let us know how these devices work

The black box contains two main devices, the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and the flight data recorder (FDR). According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the CVR records the pilot’s voice, engine sound, and radio transmissions. This allows investigators to determine engine speed and systems failure. The FDR collects information on the plane’s altitude, wind speed and direction. The NTSB says this information can be used to reconstruct a computer-animated video of the flight.

Contrary to its name, the black box is usually orange in colour so that it can be easily spotted in aircraft debris. The term ‘black box’ probably derives from the field of computing. The idea of a black box was proposed by Australian scientist David Warren in 1953. Warren was investigating the crash of the Comet, the world’s first commercial jet airliner at the time. He realized that recording voices in the cockpit could be helpful in investigating airline accidents. Warren built a prototype in 1956.
