Washington Secures Major Funding Boost to Expand Early Childhood Education Access

USAWashington Secures Major Funding Boost to Expand Early Childhood Education Access

OLYMPIA — Washington state is set to significantly expand access to early childhood education following a major new grant announced by Governor Bob Ferguson alongside representatives from the Ballmer Group.

The grant will dramatically grow the state’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP), which provides high-quality preschool to low-income families. The Ballmer Group has committed funding to create up to 10,000 additional preschool seats over the next decade, marking one of the largest investments in early learning in state history.

Governor Ferguson said he is working closely with Sen. Claire Wilson and Rep. Steve Bergquist on legislation to establish an account enabling the state to receive and manage the funds.

The announcement comes at a crucial time as Washington navigates significant budget challenges exacerbated by substantial federal cuts. The governor noted that earlier this year the federal government withheld funding for Head Start, another key preschool program, and has threatened to eliminate it entirely.

The Ballmer Group’s investment launches a new public-private partnership aimed at protecting and expanding early learning opportunities statewide. State officials say the funding will transform the lives of thousands of children and families, ensuring greater access to vital early education resources.

Governor Ferguson thanked the Ballmer Group for “stepping up for our kids” at a time when many families face uncertainty regarding essential services.
