USARenton Officials Reassure Community on Immigration Enforcement Policy

Renton, WA — City of Renton leaders and the Renton Police Department are reassuring residents amid growing concerns surrounding immigration enforcement.

In a public statement, Mayor Armondo Pavone acknowledged the fear and uncertainty many community members are experiencing due to the current national climate. The mayor emphasized that city officials are listening to residents’ concerns and remain focused on public safety and community well-being.

City leaders reiterated that Renton police officers do not assist ICE or federal agencies with civil immigration enforcement. Under Washington state’s Keep Washington Working Act, state and local law enforcement agencies are prohibited from participating in civil immigration enforcement. Renton police respond to criminal activity, not immigration status.

Officials stressed that residents should not hesitate to call 911 if they feel unsafe or believe a crime is occurring. Police will respond without asking about immigration status, regardless of whether the caller is a victim, witness, or suspect.

Renton Police Chief Jon Schuldt reaffirmed the department’s stance, stating that the department’s mission is to provide unbiased law enforcement services and to foster trust within Renton’s diverse community. The chief emphasized that officers are not trained to investigate immigration violations and do not conduct such enforcement.

City leaders say Renton remains committed to being a welcoming and inclusive community, pledging to continue working with residents to ensure everyone feels safe, respected, and protected.

The city encouraged residents to seek official information through city resources and to continue engaging with local government and law enforcement to address concerns.
