The Election Commission, moving towards completely eliminating the irregularities in the voter list, has made a historic beginning of verification of voter list from Bihar. On Saturday, the Commission started the work of intensive verification of voter list simultaneously in all 243 assembly constituencies of the state.During this time, all the 7.89 crore voters of the state will have to fill a new counting form again. Along with this, they will also have to provide proof of being a resident of the country as well as their residence in the state.
According to the Commission, instructions were also given to keep the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) engaged in the campaign free from their basic duties till the counting is completed. All divisional commissioners and district magistrates are ensuring compliance. According to the commission, the Constitution of India is supreme. All citizens, political parties and the Election Commission of India follow the Constitution. Eligibility to become a voter has been determined in Article 326 of the Constitution. In which only Indian citizens above 18 years of age and normal residents of that constituency are eligible to become voters.
According to the Commission, out of the existing 7.89 crore voters in the state, there are 4.96 crore voters whose names are already included in the last deep revision of voter list as on January 1, 2003, who just need to verify, fill up the enumeration form and submit it. Along with this, the Commission has asked all the recognised national and state level political parties to prominently involve their booth level agents in this campaign.
At present, these political parties have appointed about 1.54 lakh agents (BLAs). They can also appoint more BLAs as per the need. For verification, messages are also being sent to the registered mobile numbers of 5.74 lakh voters of Bihar. Please note that earlier in Bihar, intensive verification of voter list was done in 2003.
