Governor Bob Ferguson Urges U.S. Supreme Court to Strike Down Trump Tariffs

USAGovernor Bob Ferguson Urges U.S. Supreme Court to Strike Down Trump Tariffs

OLYMPIA, Wash. — October 26, 2025: Washington Governor Bob Ferguson announced today that he has filed a legal brief to the U.S. Supreme Court urging the justices to strike down President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which he called “reckless” and “unconstitutional.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ferguson said the tariffs threaten to cost Washington State billions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs, citing severe impacts on industries ranging from technology and aerospace to agriculture and manufacturing.

“I urged them to follow the Constitution and strike down President Trump’s reckless tariffs before our state loses billions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs,” Ferguson wrote.

The Governor emphasized that his office has partnered with 27 public and private organizations in filing the brief, forming a broad coalition of business leaders, labor groups, and consumer advocates united against the tariffs.

Ferguson argued that the tariffs violate both the Commerce Clause and the separation of powers, claiming they were implemented without proper congressional authorization. His administration contends that the trade restrictions have already driven up costs for Washington consumers and weakened the state’s export competitiveness.

The Supreme Court is expected to review the case in the coming months. Meanwhile, business associations across the Pacific Northwest have echoed Ferguson’s concerns, warning that the tariffs could further strain international trade through Seattle and Tacoma ports, key economic drivers for the region.
