World number-3 tennis star Jessica Pegula has suffered an upset in the first round of Wimbledon-2025. Third seed Pegula was defeated by world number 116 player Elisabetta Cocciaretto in just 58 minutes. The 31-year-old American player lost the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. This is her worst performance this year. Pegula has been eliminated in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in the last 5 years.

Earlier, she was knocked out in the first round of the French Open in 2020. Before Pegula, Daniil Medvedev and 8th seed Holger Rune were upsets. Two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz started with a win as he defeated Italy’s Fabio Fognini 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 in a match that lasted more than four hours. He will now face 21-year-old Tervet, who defeated Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi in his first match at Wimbledon.

World number-1 women’s tennis player Aryna Sabalenka started the tournament with a great win. Sabalenka defeated Canada’s Carson Brunstein 6-1, 7-5 in straight sets. This was Sabalenka’s 50th win in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) while being the world number-1. She became the 9th player to do so. Before her, Hingis, Serena, Davenport, Justine Henin, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Barty and Swiatek have done so.

Daniil Medvedev and 8th seed Holger Rune suffered first-round upsets. Rune lost to Nicolas Jarry 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, and Medvedev lost to Benjamin Bonzi 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.
