UNSC: What are the rules for presiding over the Security Council? How was Pakistan elected

USAUNSC: What are the rules for presiding over the Security Council? How was Pakistan elected

Pakistan has become the President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and will remain the President for the entire month. However, it did not get this presidency through any voting, but got this opportunity due to the rotation number. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, will lead the Council for the entire month.

The UNSC is the world’s strongest international body. The UNSC keeps an eye on the whole world for peace and security at the international level. This is the eighth time that Pakistan has joined the Security Council Earlier, Pakistan had got temporary membership in 1952-53, 1968-69, 1976-77, 1983-84, 1993-94, 2003-04 and 2012-13.Pakistan is expected to hold at least two open meetings during its presidency of the UNSC in July. During these meetings, it will raise the issue of Operation Sindoor, carried out after the Pahalgam terror attack, and Kashmir.

Out of this, he raised the Kashmir issue today on Wednesday (July 02, 2025). Pakistan is accused of promoting and spreading terrorism and despite this it became the President of the UNSC. So the answer to this is that technically speaking, the constitution of the UNSC says that all the members have to become the President in turn. Whether there are allegations against him or not. According to the constitution, unless a country withdraws its membership, it will have a place in the UNSC.

There are 15 member countries in the UNSC.

There are two types of membership in it – one permanent and the other temporary.

If we talk about permanent members, they are America, Russia, China, Britain and France.

Apart from these five countries, the remaining 10 countries are temporary members.
The membership of these 10 countries changes every two years. All of them get the opportunity to preside on a rotation basis.

Security Council Regulation 18 states, “The presidency of the Security Council shall be held by members of the Security Council in rotation, in alphabetical order. Each country shall hold the presidency for one calendar month.”
