Why is Pakistan upset over suspension of Indus Water Treaty?

POLITICS & LAWSWhy is Pakistan upset over suspension of Indus Water Treaty?

Pakistan is furious over India’s decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty. After the threats of Pakistan Peoples Party leader and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday that either water will flow in Sindhu or blood will flow, on Saturday Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif also boasted of giving a befitting reply with full force.

Along with this, Pakistan, scared by India’s action in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack, has completely denied its involvement in it and proposed a third party investigation. The suspension of the Indus Water Treaty may not have made any immediate difference to the water flowing towards Pakistan. But Pakistan is trembling just by imagining its impact in the future.

Shahbaz Sharif has described the Indus river as the lifeline of Pakistan. According to statistics, 80 percent of Pakistan’s irrigation is done by the water of Indus and its tributary rivers. Obviously, any change in the flow of these rivers will prove fatal for Pakistan. It will not be possible for Pakistan, which is already struggling with economic crisis and food inflation, to deal with the new crisis.
