USASouth Africa Calls for UN Security Council Session Over Venezuela Military Action

Pretoria — The South African government has urged the United Nations Security Council to urgently convene following what it described as unilateral military action in Venezuela, raising concerns over international law and global stability.

In a media statement released by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, South Africa said it views the reported military strike against Venezuela as a violation of the United Nations Charter. The statement referenced confirmations by the United States that it conducted a “large-scale military strike” in Venezuela, during which President Nicolás Maduro was reportedly captured and taken out of the country.

South Africa emphasized that the UN Charter requires all member states to refrain from the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, except in cases of self-defense. The government noted that the Charter does not authorize external military intervention in matters that fall within the domestic jurisdiction of a sovereign nation.

The statement warned that historical precedent shows unilateral military invasions often lead to instability and prolonged crises, undermining international order and the principle of equality among nations.

Calling on the UN Security Council, South Africa urged the body responsible for maintaining international peace and security to act swiftly to address the situation and prevent further escalation.
